Celebrating National Adoption Day

National Adoption Day is truly a special occasion where we join in celebration with families formed through adoption. At CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for Douglas County, we've witnessed countless children find loving homes, and this day holds particular significance for us, as it is a glimpse into one of the many reasons why CASA’s are invaluable in the child welfare system.

Adoption is a journey filled with both challenges and immense rewards. For children who've experienced abuse or neglect, it may represent a path to stability, love, and hope. CASA for Douglas County, as a representative for the best interests of these children, plays a pivotal role in ensuring their journey through the adoption process is successful.

National Adoption Day is a day of celebration, but the road leading to it can be complex. CASA Advocates stand by the side of these children, providing support to the child and their family. They work closely with case professionals to ensure that every decision is made in the child's best interest. Through countless hours of advocacy, and a deep commitment to the child's well-being, CASA Advocates help pave the way for a successful adoption. CASA Advocates and CASA Staff help the whole family understand the adoption process, providing them with a sense of security and reassurance.

“Judge Wadie Thomas, retired Douglas County Juvenile Court Judge, spearheaded this special day 24 years ago, affectionately called, National Adoption Day. Due to CASA for Douglas County’s ongoing relationship with Douglas County Juvenile Court and the Department of Health and Human Services – Child Welfare Division, it is important to partner to make this day successful. For many reasons It is a joyous occasion to see loving families open their hearts and homes to children in need of a family and the joy that adoption brings.” Kimberly C. Barnes, Executive Director – CASA for Douglas County

At CASA for Douglas County, National Adoption Day is a celebration of hope fulfilled. This year, CASA for Douglas County, as well as the partner agencies who collaborated to create Omaha’s National Adoption Day, were overjoyed to see over 40 children adopted (11 of those children were served by a CASA Volunteer Advocate) during the celebration on Saturday, November 18th.

National Adoption Day is a celebration of the power of love and the strength of families formed through adoption. As we commemorate this special day, we remain steadfast in our mission to advocate first for reunification when safe and possible. No matter what, CASA for Douglas County will continue to amplify the best interest of the children we serve.
